Peck’s Park Historical Society, Peck’s Park Schoolhouse and Museum. The school was built by John Peck for his children and for the workers’ children. His businesses were a tannery and sawmill. There was no electricity until 1938. In 1890 the teacher was paid $7.50 per week. The school continued until 1959. The wonderful thing about the school is that all of the desks, etc. were stored by the Peck family. In 1995 the property use was donated by the Peck Family to the Historical Society and the school restored. It is a real functioning museum that people can walk into.

The Fonda Johnstown and Gloversville R.R. Is Born
The first organization for building a railroad into Fulton County was effected in 1865. The road was to run from Fonda through Johnstown and Gloversville to Caroga.

Kuyahoora Valley Historical Society, formed in the early 1980s, is the regional historical society housed at the Newport Historical Center. It serves the Towns of Newport, Fairfield, Russia, and Norway, and the villages of Poland, Cold Brook, Newport, and Middleville. They have bi-monthly meetings which meet in the different communities, depending on program content and the season of the year. The Norway Historical Society is located in the former Baptist church and serves to preserve and house historical documents concerning the local area.
The not-for-profit Norway Historical Society (est. 2007) operates its museum and history center in the former Norway Baptist Church (c. 1803). The building is listed on the NYS Registry of Historic Churches. Helen Wheatley was instrumental in establishing the Norway Historical Society. Back in the Fall of 1982, a group of about 70 individuals met and formed “The Palatine Settlement Society” to begin the process of creating a living museum, a “dorf”, or village, with adjoining farms, forts, trademan’s buildings, and churches as might have been developed by the first settlers in the central Mohawk Valley in the 18th Century. They say the first person to come into the Milford area was a squatter named Carr but he didn’t stay long. Before him, a Richard Smith from New Jersey conducted a survey of the Otsego Patent area. After stopping at the settlement of Cherry Valley, he continued through the Milford area, conducting the survey for potential land speculation in 1769. Before him, archeology has shown that native Americans had been in the area since 11,000BC.

The town was first settled by European settlers around 1775, but most pioneers did not enter the area until after the Revolutionary War. The town was made from part of Pittsfield in 1806, but was then called “Lisbon.” The name was changed to “New Lisbon” in 1808.

Our guided tours are led by Haudenosaunee educators. Participants will be introduced to foundational Iroquois history, philosophies, and creative expression. Women’s roles and responsibilities, traditional lesson stories, the clan system, formation of the Iroquois Confederacy, early hunting methods, and Iroquois participation in the US military may be part of your presentation. The town of Schoharie was formed as a district in 1772 and organized as a town in 1788. Just a few years later in 1797, the towns of Sharon, Cobleskill, Middleburgh and Blenheim were taken off. Esperance and Wright were removed in 1846. A part of Middleburgh was re-annexed in 1798 and part of Esperance in 1850.

The Iroquois Museum is an educational institution dedicated to fostering understanding of Iroquois culture using Iroquois art as a window to that culture. The Museum is a venue for promoting Iroquois art and artists, and a meeting place for all peoples to celebrate Iroquois culture and diversity. As an anthropological institution, it is informed by research on archaeology, history, and the common creative spirit of modern artists and craftspeople.
