Bob Allers, local historian and brewing enthusiast, will present a fascinating talk on the history of the brewing industry in Utica from its earliest days through prohibition. Some believe the little stone building under the Genesee Street bridge is Bagg’s Hotel, but it’s not! Maria Proctor erected this building to memorialize her husband, Thomas R. Proctor, and their beloved Bagg’s Hotel. Join the History Center for an exclusive tour of the Proctor Memorial Building at Bagg Commemorative Park with City of Utica Historian Lou Parrotta.

This popular program is back for Mother’s Day weekend and will feature a scenic view of the Erie Canal. Tickets are $40 for non-members and $35 for OCHC members and include all art materials, one beverage ticket, and light snacks. Pre-registration is required. The city of Utica has a rich history in professional baseball.

The 1947 Utica Blue Sox laid the foundation for the team that would go on to become the 1950 National League champion, the Philadelphia Phillies. Author Peter Pagliaro will discuss his new book, including Hall of Famer Richie Ashburn, Stan Lopata, Granny Hamner, and other stars who took the field for both Utica and Philadelphia during the late 1940s.

Amelia Simmons and America’s First Cookbook

In 1796 Amelia Simmons wrote what is widely regarded as the first American cookbook, American Cookery, but very little is known about her.

Pamela Cooley has sought to solve the mystery surrounding Simmons through historical and genealogical research. This talk reveals the results of this research, analyzes some often-cited theories, and shares Cooley’s theory. This is a virtual-only available via Zoom.

Ruthie Deeply by author Vincent Palmieri shares the true-life story of Ruth Morgan.

She faced challenging circumstances after being abandoned in east Utica in 1934 including homelessness and being forced into the Syracuse State School. She remained steadfast in her belief to be released and achieved her goal; she is currently alive and well at 87 years old in Herkimer County.

Ruth's life story is truly the personification of the old adage, "It is not where you start that counts; it is where you finish
