SLEIGHING PARTY’S ROUGH TRIP
Rome High School Students Went on an Excursion Through the Storm to Holland Patent and Were Obliged to Spend the Night There–Some Were Badly Frost-Bitten-Other News.
Rome, Feb. 19.–It will be some time before the seniors of the high school and a few of their friends, all numbering about 60, forget their strawride to Holland Patent last night. They left the high school about 7 clock and did not reach their destination till 11:30. All the way there was a blinding snow storm and the members of the party, who ceased to be jolly long before Holland Patent was reached suffered terribly from the cold. Two young ladies became partially unconscious about two miles this side of Holland Patent and had to be given medical attendance. Several of the party froze their fingers and ears, and one young man froze one of his feet, the boys having to get out and help break the roads through. The horses also were about exhausted. The party did not attempt to leave on their return trip till 9 o’clock this morning, which accounts for so many vacant seats at the forenoon session of the high school. Some of the students returned by rail, reaching Rome on the 11:09 train, which was half an hour late. After they arrived at Holland Patent they partook of a good oyster supper at the Clarendon Hotel, after which all entered into the spirit of merriment, forgetting what they had passed through.
