Founded in 1876, The Oneida County Historical Society collects and commemorates the history of Central New York in general and County of Oneida in particular. From the Battlefield at Oriskany to the Boilermaker Road Race of today; the Native Americans who first called this land home to the later inhabitants who shaped local and national destinies, Oneida County has a remarkable history – filled with important events and fascinating figures.

Constructed in 1993, the center stands as a testament to the rich lives, talents and heroism of the Oneida people. The building is named in memory of Richard Chrisjohn (Wolf Clan), former Nation Representative, whose Oneida name means “he gives.” That spirit of giving is what the facility is all about – it is designed to give visitors and future generations sense of their roots and heritage.

Utica
The most commonly accessed public records are stored in the County Office Building in downtown Utica on the fifth floor in the Clerk’s Office. Older documents can be found in the Records room located on B1 in the County Office Building and at the Regional Records Center in Westmoreland. The Westmoreland facility provides a central storage location that is equipped to handle the large volume of documents in the Clerk’s care and to ensure their continued preservation.

Although the records center does not house Vital Records, many of our resources are useful in compiling genealogies. We have a number of city directories for the cities of Rome and Utica, large collection of DAR records, marriage records from 1921-1929, local newspapers from 1841-1879, as well as deeds and mortgages. For other resources, you may wish to visit the Utica Public Library which is just a few blocks from the County Office Building. The internet is also a good place to look for genealogy information. Two sites you may wish to visit are www.dar.org/library and www.familysearch.org.
