Handmade Mohawk Regalia Featured at Hartwick College’s Yager Museum
Oneonta, NY — Hartwick College’s Yager Museum of Art & Culture is proud to welcome Mohawk regalia maker Kanerahti:io DJ White for a cultural presentation on Wednesday, Nov. 11, from 1 to 4 p.m. During the event, White will showcase his collection of handmade Mohawk regalia, speak about Mohawk cultural practices, perform songs and celebrate his culture. The presentation is free and open to the public and visitors are encouraged to drop in at any time during the event.
“DJ is an amazing educator and ambassador for the Kanienkeha’ka/Mohawk people,” said Quentin Lewis, museum curator. “He brought his award-winning dance troupe to Oneonta last year and we’re very honored to bring him here to show off his skills as a craftsman and culture-bearer.”
The event is made possible thanks to a generous grant from the Richard and Gerri L. Haan Fund for Native American Studies at Hartwick College.
In addition to hosting White, the Yager Museum’s current exhibits include “The Four Seasons: Selections from the Yager Museum Collections,” “My Ancestors in the Sky World,” by Melanie Printup Hope, “Masterpieces of European Art,” and a selection of new acquisitions to the museum’s collection.
The museum is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. when the college is in session. The museum will be closed during Hartwick College recess, Nov. 21-30. Admission is free. For more information, contact museum curator Quentin Lewis at 607-431-4481 or lewisq@hartwick.edu.
