Herkimer County Historical Society Awarded $1.2 Million for Transform Heritage Access Project

Herkimer, NY — The Herkimer County Historical Society is thrilled to announce that it has been awarded $1,208,000 to advance its transformative Transform Heritage Access project. This significant funding boost, graciously allocated by the local Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) grant committee, marks a pivotal moment for the society and its ongoing mission to preserve and celebrate Herkimer County’s rich history.

“We are incredibly honored and excited to receive this generous support,” said Cassandra Castle, Executive Director of the Herkimer County Historical Society. “Our deepest thanks go to the local DRI grant committee for believing in our vision and championing this investment in Herkimer County’s history. We also extend our sincere gratitude to Governor Hochul and New York State for their commitment to revitalization efforts across our region.”

As a nonprofit organization dedicated to heritage preservation, this funding will empower the Herkimer County Historical Society to realize ambitious goals that were once only dreams. Key initiatives include the installation of elevators in both the Suiter and Eckler buildings to ensure full accessibility, expansion of storage facilities to enhance access to historic collections, and crucial interior renovations to support expanded programs, events, and community use.

“We’d like to express our heartfelt appreciation to Board President Lou Christie and the entire Board of Trustees for their diligent review of the proposal and unwavering support of our vision for the future,” added Cassandra Castle.

This transformative investment represents a significant stride toward opening more historic spaces to the public and safeguarding Herkimer County’s heritage for future generations to cherish and explore.

Congratulations are extended to the Village of Herkimer and all other grant recipients. The Herkimer County Historical Society eagerly anticipates witnessing the positive impact of their projects as they come to fruition.
