Herkimer County Historical Society Hosts Talk on the Redco Food Strike

Historian James Cheney to Explore Labor Unrest, Lessons Learned, and Echoes of the Past

Herkimer, NY – The Herkimer County Historical Society is proud to present an important and thought-provoking program with local historian James Cheney, titled “Redco Food Strike of 2007–2008: Echoes of Labor’s Past.” The event will take place on Saturday, August 9th at 2 pmat 406 North Main St., Herkimer, NY.

This engaging presentation will revisit the events of the 2007–2008 strike at Redco Food—a defining moment in recent Mohawk Valley labor history. Cheney will offer a compelling analysis of the strike’s causes, key players, and consequences for workers, management, and the broader community. More than a retelling, the talk will connect this modern labor struggle to historic movements from the region’s industrial past.

“Though separated by a century, the concerns of the Redco Food workers weren’t so different from those of textile workers, miners, and factory laborers of the early 20th century,” said Cheney. “Fair pay, safe conditions, and respect on the job remain timeless issues.”

Through historical documents, media coverage, and oral history interviews, Cheney will highlight the strike’s legacy and offer lessons still relevant today—as labor issues return to national headlines.

Admission is free, donations are welcomed. Seating is limited and early reservations are encouraged.
