Early Spring at the Herkimer Home State Historic Site

Historic Marker Weekend

Volunteers Needed for National Historic Marker Weekend Community Service Project Mohawk Valley

People everywhere enjoy historic markers, from roadsides and parks to historic sites or even their own neighborhoods. According to the Historical Marker Database, more than 190,000 markers are in the United States, but many have not been cleaned or cared for for years.

Join Oneida County History Center for the annual National Historic Marker Weekend on Saturday, April 25, 2026.

This year’s project is to clean the markers at the Herkimer Homestead State Historic Site located at 200 NY-169, Little Falls, NY. This stately home was built in 1764 by Nicholas Herkimer famously injured at the Battle of Oriskany. Visit oneidacountyhistory.org to register for this event.

This event was launched as a grassroots celebration by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation, a philanthropic organization based in Syracuse, N.Y. National Historic Marker Weekend brings people together to maintain local markers by cleaning them and providing an opportunity to celebrate and preserve history. Individuals and groups of all sizes, including families and friends, civic organizations, schools, and young groups, are welcome to volunteer.
