COOPERSTOWN, NY — Blacksmithing Weekend returns to The Farmers’ Museum in Cooperstown on Saturday and Sunday, September 28 and 29 from 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Visitors will find a variety of demonstrations, exhibits, vendors, and hands-on activities featuring resident and visiting blacksmiths. Take part in a guided tour of the Tradesman’s Tool Chest exhibit or a scavenger hunt to find evidence of forged items throughout the museum’s historic buildings. There’s also an activity area, displays of tools, books and more.
New this year!
New this year are guided tours of The Tradesman’s Tool Chest exhibit (11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.). Originally designed to showcase the museum’s extensive tool collection, this exhibit depicts the various trades that were vital in rural life during the 19th century. In addition to the Blacksmith, a number of other tradesmen worked metal into products required by New Yorkers in the 1800’s. Specialized skills were used to cast iron stove parts and hardware, craft sheet metal household utensils, and forge and cut nails and files.
In the Main Barn, see The Buzz About Pollinators, an interactive exhibit all about bees and the many other insects and organisms like them that help make farming possible.
Entry to the event is included with museum admission: $17.50 adults (13-64), $12.50 seniors (65+), $10 juniors (7-12), children 6 and younger and museum members are free. Purchase tickets at the museum on the day of the event. Free museum admission is also available for those receiving SNAP benefits (up to 4 people) with the presentation of a SNAP Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card.
